Hi Brad and Brad,
Since listening to
Episode 84 of Self Pollution Radio Part 1, I have been on a Sonic Youth
binge. After hearing "Teenage Riot" for the first time in a while, I
found myself listening to "Daydream Nation" a few times that week after
hearing the podcast. I've always said that I have to be in the right
mood to listen to Sonic Youth and for some reason that time is now.
It's been about 9 years since the last time I was. Given that Eddie had
played "Teenage Riot" on SPR, it made me look into any connection
between Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth. I wasn't able to find a whole lot,
other than that Sonic Youth had toured and opened for Pearl Jam twice,
in 2000 and 2006. It's interesting to me, because I can't imagine what a
contrast it must have been to show up to Sonic Youth playing live and
then switching over your palette to Pearl Jam. Both bands have
incredible musicians in their own respects, but two very different
styles. I'm not sure how many other people than myself enjoy both Sonic
Youth and Pearl Jam. BradB had mentioned he hadn't gotten into them
during their pinnacle, however BradL digged them. I can definitely see
Sonic Youth being fairly polarizing given how eclectic their style is.
However, what I've found is, once you're in, you're in deep.
The other tidbit I found, while pretty minor, is that Jeff provided them
a subtle shout-out during Pearl Jam's induction into the Rock and Roll
HOF. Jeff wore a shirt that listed several bands who had not been
inducted into the HOF yet. One of those bands was Sonic Youth. Lastly,
one more thing I want to add is that Kim Gordon is an absolute
bad-ass. She was revolutionary for her time and it wouldn't surprise me
given Pearl Jam's stance on feminism that they may be intertwined on
that front.
Forced to endure, what I could not forgive,
