March 26, 2020: Top 5 Live Performances

Hi Brad and Brad, I wish I could say I've seen Pearl Jam live frequently enough to be able to make a list of first-hand experiences.  Since I can't, mainly I can only do so through bootlegs and YouTube.  Here are my top 5 favorite live performances. 5. Evolution - Madison Square Garden, July 8, 2003 (Live at the Garden) To have gotten the crowd into such a frenzy, that the stage rattled, still blows my mind a bit.  I love watching Ed's reaction as he feels the ground moving beneath him.  4. Given to Fly - St. Louis, October 11, 2000 In remembrance of Kimberly Rae Schaefer, I remember finding this a few years ago on a YouTube "Rabbit Hole" and watched it several times after.  It was still before the band started speeding up the tempo of this song on stage.  3. Not For You - SNL Reheasral, April 1994 My favorite part of this performance is when Ed's eyes roll into the back of his end when he sings "I still remember, why don'

March 16, 2020: Red Mosquito vs. 1/2 Full (Read on SPT Episode 132)

Hi Brad and Brad, In some ways choosing Red Mosquito as a song to go over in a time like this brings a lot of irony.  "If I had known then, what I know now." Without getting too political, I have a feeling a lot of decision makers in this country are asking themselves just that.  At least we have Gigat(r)on to look forward to in less than 2 weeks.  If I do find myself quarantined, I can expect myself to spend a lot of quality time with the new record. One thing you guys touched on during your episode on Red Mosquito, was that there isn't another song in the catalog like it.  The guitar sound isn't exactly the same coming from Mike, but for some reason I start hearing 1/2 Full every time I listen to Red Mosquito.  Lyrically it's a much different song and Ed's vocals are much more aggressive than Red Mosquito.  Still, these two almost seem to be inspired musically by one another where Mike is just going any which way he feels in the foreground and backg

March 8, 2020: Focus on Your Focusness (Read on the Porch Episode 48)

Hi Jessi and Kate, We're less than three weeks from Gigaton!  I found a lot to unpack on your episode on Superblood Wolfmoon and will try not to make this email too long.  I really enjoyed this song the first time I heard it, and have tried inserting the track into Backspacer, which actually works really well.  I thought this song was somewhat of a combination of Johnny Guitar and Supersonic, however I think it's more lyrically and musically complex than both of them.  I love the bridges in the "la la la" part and "she's a stunner and I am stunned." The song is so fast right before those parts, it's almost like they wrote it this way to give Ed a chance to catch his breath.  I agree with the sentiment that this may be a difficult song to pull off live.  I tried to put into perspective how fast and lyrically complex this song is and tried to compare it to other fast-paced songs that didn't repeat lyrics constantly throughout.  Out of th
