February 27, 2020: Backspacer 2.0

Hi Brad and Brad, I have been thoroughly enjoying Superblood Wolfmoon and am getting more and more anxious for the release of Gigat(r)on next month.  One of the more common things mentioned about Superblood Wolfmoon is that it sounds like a track that didn't make the cut on Backspacer.  I liken the song to be somewhat of a combination of Johnny Guitar and Supersonic, where it was almost like Superblood Wolfmoon was their "third attempt" at coming out with the rocker they tried to make in the previous two.  I wanted to envision Superblood Wolfmoon on Backspacer and decided to drop it into the track listing.  My favorite spot for it was putting it between Amongst the Waves and Unthought Known.  It provided nice contrast between those two songs.  After listening to it in this context, I can definitely see Superblood Wolfmoon on Backspacer. Now to get a little weird.  The last time I ranked my favorite studio albums in order, I had placed Backspacer at the bottom of

February 24, 2020: Habit (Read on the Porch, Episode 46)

Hi Jessi and Kate, One of my favorite things about No Code is how a collection of songs that seemingly stick out from one another, can actually flow so perfectly in a track list.  No Code was the second-to-last album I obtained of Pearl Jam's after I jumped on the wagon in the early 2000's.  I knew of "Off He Goes," but hadn't heard any of the other tracks until I played No Code for the first time.  Not what I expected at all.  There was significant contrast from track-to-track, the most recognized being "Sometimes" into "Hail, Hail." The biggest kick in the face though I would have to argue is the transition between "Off He Goes" into "Habit." The outro to "Off He Goes" is warm and comforting, like you're taking a scenic road trip along the ocean.  After that, it's almost like a wild animal comes out of nowhere and jumps on the hood of your car!  It took me a while to warm up to "Habit.&q

February 1, 2020: Clairvoyance (Mach II) (Read on the Porch, Episode 44)

Hi Jessi and Kate, Jessi, I would like to point out that my wife saw your "Romeo and Juliet" shirt and wanted me to tell you how much she appreciated it.  She also wanted me to mention she saw the movie in the theater 11 times! I wrote the Brads last week about my nerdery on the term clairvoyant and how captivated I've been by the term.  Since I wrote that email, my feeling on the connotation of it in this song has continued to evolve.  If you look at the term "clairvoyance" it took me down an even deeper rabbit hole.  So I'd like to share my feelings on the meaning of "Dance of the Clairvoyants" in regard to this new meaning.  I'm going to call this my Nerdery going to Mach II. The term clairvoyance can be tied to Parapsychology, which immediately got me thinking of Peter Venkman of Ghostbusters, who says he has a Ph.D. in Parapsychology.  To summarize what I've found regarding clairvoyance, it references the paranormal.
