March 31, 2019: Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam

Hi Brad and Brad, Since listening to Episode 84 of Self Pollution Radio Part 1, I have been on a Sonic Youth binge.  After hearing "Teenage Riot" for the first time in a while, I found myself listening to "Daydream Nation" a few times that week after hearing the podcast.  I've always said that I have to be in the right mood to listen to Sonic Youth and for some reason that time is now.  It's been about 9 years since the last time I was.  Given that Eddie had played "Teenage Riot" on SPR, it made me look into any connection between Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth.  I wasn't able to find a whole lot, other than that Sonic Youth had toured and opened for Pearl Jam twice, in 2000 and 2006.  It's interesting to me, because I can't imagine what a contrast it must have been to show up to Sonic Youth playing live and then switching over your palette to Pearl Jam.  Both bands have incredible musicians in their own respects, but two v

March 29, 2019: Reflective Songs (Read on The Porch Episode 12)

Hi Jessi and Kate, I'm an episode behind, but did just go through Episode 10 covering "Hard to Imagine." You guys had talked about how this song can lead to you beginning to reflect on your lives and it got me to thinking about how Pearl Jam has a handful of songs that do the same for me.  The one I go to the most is "Present Tense." I love the lyrics and the music so much to this song.  Especially with the message of, after reflection you need to keep yourself focusing on what's in front of you and not dwell on the past. I made a short list of a few others, including "Release," which Jessi mentioned during the conversation.  Present Tense Hard to Imagine Release Indifference Arc Yellow Moon The Long Road Inside Job The other one that really cuts deep for me is "Arc." There's something about that track when I hear it that really gets to my core.  It's almost like coming up for air

March 18, 2019: Women Shaping the Future

Hi Brad and Brad, I really want to thank you for reading my Concept Album email on this week's episode.  It really meant a lot to me to have that spread over your podcast and to have some feedback.  I put a lot of thought into that mix and if either of you decide to try it out, I hope you enjoy and most of all it tells a story by the way I sequenced it. I'm still hooked on Brandi Carlile and a friend of mine sent me a screen shot of the following article on her in Rolling Stone earlier this month.  It's part of their issue titled "Women Shaping the Future," which has a cool montage of commentary by the women involved. Article: Brandi Carlile: At Home With the Folk-Rock Rebel In case you hadn't mentioned, and I apologize if you did BradL, but Mike owns land next to Brandi's home in Maple Valley, WA.  Mike is also quoted in the article saying the following: “Brandi is the only singer to make me consistently cry when I hear h

March 6, 2019: Cover Stories

Hi Brad and Brad, Thanks to Episode 79, BrAD RADIO, I've been listening to a lot of Brandi Carlile's music after hearing "Hold Out Your Hand." I had first heard that song last year during an episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee .  I hadn't heard the song, " The Joke " until a few weeks ago and I have to say that it is one of the most moving songs I've ever heard.  Brandi's most obvious link I can find to Pearl Jam is through their contribution to the album "Cover Stories," which is a compilation of covers from Brandi's 2007 album "The Story." Pearl Jam covers the song "Again Today" in a past-paced rendition, which if you've heard the original version is a stark contrast.  If I'm listening correctly, it sounds like she sings backup to Eddie during the chorus throughout the song.  I can't remember, although I'm pretty sure you guys touched upon her joining the guys o
