September 24, 2018: Up Here In My Tree/Avocado

Hi Brad and Brad, Last week I had a friend of mine suggest I start my own weekly blog on Pearl Jam topics.  Given that I love talking about this band and really don't have many people in my immediate circles to nerd out on PJ, it could serve as a nice platform to have more interaction with the PJ Community.  What I decided to do was re-purpose the weekly emails I write into your podcast and post them on a blog, which I have called "Up Here In My Tree: A Pearl Jam Blog."  I'm also hoping that this will bring more attention to Single Podcast Theory.  The narrative of this blog is to tie in how your podcast has helped me find an outlet and a new interaction with you both and the SPT listeners.  I hope I'm not intruding by doing this and most of all hope that it brings more listeners to your podcast.   https://uphereinmytreepjblog. blogspot.com/ The other reason why I wanted to write in this week is in regards to the self-titled album or Avoc

The year of 2018 has been the most challenging of my life, however it pales in comparison for how challenging it has been for my wife, Morgan.  On January 15th, 2018, she was hospitalized and found to have suffered a stroke.  To make a long story short, she has persevered and has a good outlook to make as close to a full recovery as one can imagine.  It has been difficult to accept what has happened to her.  My means of coping came through music.  I felt angry at many things and turned back to the Grunge era of the early 90's to try to help me get through my own emotions.  The angrier and rawer the music, the louder I wanted to hear it.  Mainly, I listened to "Dirt" by Alice in Chains, "In Utero" by Nirvana and "BadMotorFinger" by Soundgarden.  I sprinkled in other bands like Rage Against the Machine and the Stone Temple Pilots.  What was missing from my catalog was the band whom I've considered myself the closet to, Pearl Jam.  I can&

September 17, 2018: Dave A

Hi Brad and Brad, This week I wanted to write about how much I have come to notice Dave A more on the studio records, especially since you guys went over the Vitalogy and Vs. albums.  I can now understand why Brad B. has officially called him his favorite of the drummers.  Lately, I have been listening to Vs. a lot lately, hence why I adopted Rearviewmirror as my current track that I have gotten to know more intimately.  I have considered Vs. to be their highest quality album out of the catalog, more than Ten because the sound is more developed, a bit more raw and there isn’t one track I would consider skipping (I wouldn’t skip anything on Ten either).  If I were to make a list of top 50 studio tracks, there’s a good chance every track off of Vs. would have a chance to make that list.  When I listen to Vs. I fixate on Dave A now.  I can officially say that W.M.A. Is probably the best performance by any drummer on any of the studio albums.  He just flat out beast mode

September 12, 2018: Rearviewmirror (Read on SPT Episode 60)

Hi Brad and Brad, I greatly appreciate you reading my email in Episode 58.  Just like you had read my email during Episode 53, you managed to make me laugh through a 5-minute tangent the first being about cheese-filled hot dogs and the recent being Brad B's dislike for that movie...wait give him a few minutes...what movie was that?  Oh the one with the red-headed kid who has a face you want to punch.  Ah right, the Sandlot!  I actually am halfway through Episode 37, where Brad B spent an exorbitant amount of time trying to tie Harry Nielson, Seinfeld, Jon Voight and a movie with the title containing "Cowboy" in it (Midnight Cowboy).  My email this week is with regard to Rearviewmirror.  It's a track I have gravitated toward recently and find it to be one of the most well-rounded tracks in both music and lyrics in the entire catalog.  I've always enjoyed the song greatly, but have now found it to become a metaphor for what I am trying to do w

August 29, 2018: Kate Cotton's Signoff (Read on SPT Episode 58)

Hi Brad and Brad, I just finished listening to Episode 55 about your 5-day experience in Chicago and it was awesome to get to live that experience through you both and everyone you guys recorded on the podcast  I wish I could have been fortunate enough to have been there with you and the other listeners, but it was great to hear about Brad L.'s first concert in 20 years.  Listening to his emotional response during night 1 made me a bit emotional.  I'm very glad that you both had a life-changing experience in Wrigleyville, even despite the weather on Monday and the red/orange puke shower Brad L. endured.  My main reason for writing you guys this week is in response to Kate Cotton's signoff.  I can say for myself, that I completely agree with Kate's opinion on how you both have impacted me through your podcast.  This year more than ever I needed something or someone to interact with to take my mind off of what was going on in my life.  Dealing with

August 26, 2018: Album Rankings and Tracks

Hi Brad and Brad, I have just finished listing to Episode 29, Lost Dogs Disc 1, and am planning on listening to Episode 30 later today.  I put together my list of album rankings and favorites/least favorite tracks on each album.  I even had to put in "Runner Ups" because in some cases it was difficult to name a clear-cut favorite.  It was difficult calling any of their albums my least favorite, because there is no album I dislike.  I believe this has been said many times on the show, but what exemplifies how solid Pearl Jam is, is the fact there is so album many of us dislike.  I can't say that about a lot of my other favorite bands.  For my presentation, I completely nerded out and spreadsheeted my list.  Rank Album Favorite Runner Up Least Favorite 1 Yield Given to Fly Faithful Push Me, Pull Me 2 No Code Present Tense In My Tree I’m Open 3 Vs. August 14, 2018: No Code

Hi Brad and Brad, I am continuing to make my way through season 1 (now halfway through episode 20) and am keeping up with the new episodes as they come out.  I hope you guys have a blast at Wrigley and I wish I could be there to meet both of you.  My wife and I lived in Edgewater (just north of Wrigleyville) for a little over a year and really enjoyed our stay in Chicago. My main reason for writing you guys tonight is in regards to No Code.  Ever since you guys began to mention that both of your favorite album was No Code, it has been on constant play for me (when I am not listening to your podcast).  It was an album when I first listened to that I only really enjoyed Hail, Hail and Off He Goes, but it kept growing on me over the years as other songs like In My Tree and Present Tense (top 3 song for me now) began to resonate with me.  In the past decade, the album grew on me well enough that I began to better appreciate the brilliance of it.  Now after hearing y

August 6, 2018: Thank You

Hi Brad and Brad, I wanted to thank you both for reading my email on your Episode 53.  Despite your first few episodes, you haven't lost me as a listener!  I am past Episode 11 now (started listening last Tuesday) and am trying to get caught up in the next several weeks.  It meant a lot to me to hear you read my email on my way into work this morning. One thing I realized after hearing you read my email is that I didn't do enough justice for how miraculous her recovery has been.  Without going too much into detail, we live in a third-story walk-up condo in Milwaukee without an elevator.  Because of her right-sided paralysis, I was being told that we would likely have to move into a ground floor apartment or house.  To make a long story short, that move was never needed.  At the end of her inpatient hospital stay, she tried our stairs and made it up without hardly any issues.  Now she's hoping to get back into law school at Marquette, which she was hal

July 31, 2018: Started Your Podcast (Read on SPT Episode 53)

Hi Brad and Brad, I am a new listener who is just about to begin Season 1, Episode 3.  Last night I just happened to search iTunes for a podcast about Pearl Jam and luckily your show came up.  I had a chance to listen to Episode 1 on the way to work this morning and then decided to take a walk in the middle of the work day to begin Episode 2, which I then finished on the car ride home.  Your episode on Ten really energized me and made me remember just how incredible I felt that album was when I first started listening to it.  Hearing you guys go down track-by-track and dissect the album made me appreciate it all over again.  Thank you for that.  I am looking forward to getting caught up, which may take a while given you are at Season 2, Episode 52 now. Your podcast comes at an important time for me right now.  This year has been really tough.  My wife, who's only 33, suffered a pretty massive stroke back in January.  She was hospitalized for almost 2 months a
