Hi Jessi and Kate,
I don't know what I am going to do until the week of October 22nd. What I am confident of is that I will definitely be feeling all of the withdrawals. When you were listing off the songs you covered in Season 2, I had forgotten almost half of the list were discussed. I hope all goes well with your upcoming move, Jessi and that record store day(s) help out your store in a big way. Kate, I hope things continue to stay where they are in NY with COVID over the next couple of months. It looks like the state of New York has kept cases down drastically compared to the Spring, I can only hope they continue through the fall.
You guys both named off 3 songs you would consider covering in Season 3, and it got me wanting to throw my suggestions into the ring as well. I could come out and say "Don't Gimmie No Lip" so I can hope to get some hot takes from Kate, which were similar to those of Jessi on "Parachutes." Where would that song rank on the "Dinky Meter?" Would it just be Dinky? Rinky Dinky? Stinky Dinky? That would be a classic in the making. Here are the three that I would love to hear you guys talk about.
1. Grievance
I mentioned several weeks ago this song struck a nerve with me. It still does. The music is awesome, but the lyrics are so powerful and specific to me given the platform professional sports are using to protest against social injustice. My hope is by the time you guys are back on in 6 weeks, there will be significant change in this area, but I am extremely skeptical of that. On a side note, I am scheduled to discuss this song with Branden Palomo on the Better Band Podcast in November and am pretty psyched to do so.
2. Man of the Hour
This song started to grow on me more about a year ago. It's a beautiful tribute to saying goodbye to one's life. I remember hearing it first on the Benaroya Hall performance and then shortly after watching "Big Fish," which I believe they place it during the closing credits of the movie. Just as I am typing this, I now really want to go back and watch "Big Fish" again. "Man of the Hour" has become sentimental enough for me, that I want it played at my funeral.
3. Porch
I will start this off with a bit of a "Brad B" comment here. The name of your podcast is "The Porch" but you haven't covered the song "Porch" yet?!?! After hearing your guys episode on "Alive" it got me back into Ten, which I began listening to in the car from the CD Jessi sent me with my quarantine care package I got a few months back. What's so interesting about this song is that it's a deep cut, but yet it's maybe their most iconic song when considering their shows. They go into "Jam Band" mode and Eddie literally put his life on the line in the early years of the band by climbing onto rafters and jumping into the crowd. I also think a lot about the Unplugged performance and when Ed wrote "Pro Choice" on his arm.
I look forward to the stuff you have planned for the Patrons coming up and should also have a video back to you later tonight.
Forced to endure, what I could not forgive,
Chris
