Hi Jessi and Kate,
I'm about 8 months late on writing about Insignificance, but I felt compelled to do so because I have been on a serious Binaural binge over the past couple of weeks. I remember you guys covering this song, but didn't realize it was all the way back on Halloween of last year! This was arguably one of your best episodes, because you two really dissected this track from the music and the lyrics as thoroughly as any song you've covered. I've liked Insignificance, but never considered it a track that I could get close to. Then again, I could say that about a lot of Binaural until now. Ironically, there are a lot of political and humanistic situations all berating us at once, which I've found Binaural to put into music very bluntly.
There are so many angles I could take on giving my take on Insignificance. One thing I disagree with you both on, is that I think this is one of the more eclectic songs on the record. The music is probably the most layered of any track and the lyric has been described as Ed speaking out against a Boeing facility that built bombs. However, as you two discussed in great detail that the lyrics can speak to so many of today's situations. It's interesting how you two described it back in October of 2019, I can only imagine if you had covered Insignificance right now.
Two things really stand out to me from the lyrics.
- This speaks to how insignificant so many of our youth and impoverished communities, which are mostly minority. I take it as how the government (mainly Republican) is trying to suppress their voice through so many tactics to keep them from being able to make a difference with their vote. We are in a time where we really have to push back against gerrymandering and voter suppression so that the game that is the Electoral College does not override a majority in the popular vote.
- You guys spoke about how our government has been so much about right and wrong, and does not truly speak on behalf of the areas in the US they are supposed to "represent." In Wisconsin we have one democratic senator (Tammy Baldwin) and one republican (Ron Johnson). I have never gotten a response from Senator Johnson in any communication to him. I believe that unless you align with the political views of your congressmen and congresswomen, that your voice becomes "Insignificant."
The swallowed seeds of arrogance...
Breeding in the thoughts of ten...
Thousand fools that fight Irreverance.
Breeding in the thoughts of ten...
Thousand fools that fight Irreverance.
There are many trying to break through from their "Insignificance" and I want to support the movement as best I can.
It's instilled... to wanna live,
Chris
